Dr. Sophie Ling-chia Wei (魏伶珈) of the Department of Translation and Interpreting is invited to present a keynote speech in the symposium “Passions for Learning in Religious Perspectives: From Jerome to the Jesuits” at the University of Western Australia. The topic of her speech is “The Jesuit Figurists’ Written Emotions in Chinese Manuscripts and Novels.” Organized by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1180-1800 (CHE), the symposium explores and calibrates (1) the various orientations to learning of different faiths and confessions in the medieval and early modern periods, (2) the role that scholars of different faiths assigned to the role of the emotions in learning, and (3) the emotional lives of scholars in the shadow of religion.
